Advanced hydrogel interfaces exhibiting finely tuned mechanical characteristics and diffusion properties are essential in wearable and implantable biosensors, addressing tissue–device mismatches and controlling target analyte transport in biofluids. This work presents an ion-mediated structural engineering approach designed to meticulously regulate the porous architecture and mechanical robustness of poly(vinyl alcohol)-alginate hydrogels (PAH) through straightforward ionic modulation, effectively addressing inherent tradeoffs between mechanical strength and analyte diffusion. Utilizing three complementary ionic mechanisms—salting-out, calcium ion chelation, and sequence-directed biomineralization—hydrogels with tailored porous microstructures are fabricated. The resulting hydrogels exhibit pore sizes ranging from 65 nm to 2.5 µm, mechanical moduli of 50 to 140 kPa, and controlled analyte diffusion behaviors. Leveraging this structural tunability, two exemplary glucose biosensors are demonstrated: a highly porous hydrogel-integrated wearable biosensor designed for rapid and sensitive glucose monitoring in sweat, and a densely structured hydrogel-integrated implantable biosensor optimized for robust and continuous glucose tracking in interstitial fluid. This innovative methodology elucidates critical interconnections between the hydrogel’s ion-mediated microstructural architecture, its mechanical robustness and tunable diffusion characteristics, and the resulting biosensing performance optimized for wearable and implantable applications, thereby advancing the design paradigm for next-generation personalized biosensor interfaces.

The physiological pH level at wound sites is one of the fundamental factors for monitoring wound conditions in clinical practice. To continuously assess the wound conditions, a variety of bioelectronic pH sensors are extensively developed. However, despite significant advances in bioelectronics for wound monitoring, the application of existing bioelectronic devices, primarily designed as bandages or patches, remains challenging for monitoring pH levels in deep wounds. Here, a flexible pH-sensing suture is introduced that can be simultaneously used as both a precise pH sensor for wound monitoring and a conventional medical suture. The electrochemical pH-sensing suture comprises Au nanoparticle-based flexible electrodes functionalized with polyaniline for the working electrode and Ag/AgCl for the reference electrode, seamlessly integrated onto a standard medical suturing thread. This dual-function sensing suture offers a reliable and high sensitivity of 58.9 mV pH−1, negligible hysteresis, high stability, and excellent selectivity in pH sensing. The biocompatibility of the sensing suture is systematically verified for its in vivo use. To demonstrate the capabilities of the pH-sensing suture, it is successfully applied to an incision and chronic wound model of mouse to perform continuous and accurate monitoring of the inflammation and healing progress of the wound throughout the healing period.

Plastic waste is a pernicious environmental pollutant that threatens ecosystems and human health by releasing contaminants including di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and bisphenol A (BPA). Therefore, a machine-learning (ML)-powered electrochemical aptasensor was developed in this study for simultaneously detecting DEHP and BPA in river waters, particularly to minimize the electrochemical signal errors caused by varying pH levels. The aptasensor leverages a straightforward and effective surface modification strategy featuring gold nanoflowers to achieve low detection limits for DEHP and BPA (0.58 and 0.59 pg/mL, respectively), excellent specificity, and stability. The least-squares boosting (LSBoost) algorithm was introduced to reliably monitor the targets regardless of pH; it employs a layer that adjusts the number of multi-indexes and the parallel learning structure of an ensemble model to accurately predict concentrations by preventing overfitting and enhancing the learning effect. The ML-powered aptasensor successfully detected targets in 12 river sites with diverse pH values, exhibiting higher accuracy and reliability. To our knowledge, the platform proposed in this study is the first attempt to utilize ML for the simultaneous assessment of DEHP and BPA. This breakthrough allows for comprehensive investigations into the effects of contamination originating from diverse plastics by eliminating external interferent-caused influences.

This article presents a lightweight, flexible, multiaxial, and multimodal capacitive tactile sensing design for robotic or prosthetic hand manipulation. The sensor conforms readily to curved surfaces, which wrap around the back and sides of a finger. With a microstructured porous dielectric material, the sensor has a desirable combination of a wide dynamic range with high resolution (0.5–500 kPa in the normal direction). Each taxel measures a combination of normal, shear, and torsional stresses. The capacitive sensor uses active shielding to reduce sensitivity to electromagnetic interference and when contacting a variety of materials with different conductivity and dielectric constants—including soft, wet materials such as tofu or gelatin. By dynamically changing the combinations of electrodes sampled, the sensor can also provide dynamic tactile information at frequencies over 100 Hz. With this combination of capabilities, the sensor is demonstrated for detecting changes in grasp force, and events such as making or breaking contact and the onset of linear or torsional sliding. This work presents the design and characterization of the sensor and demonstrates it in tasks such as handling fragile food items.

Cavitas sensors and point-of-need sensors capable of providing physical and biochemical information from the oral cavity and saliva have attracted great attention because they offer remarkable advantages for noninvasive sensing systems. Herein, we introduce the basic anatomy and physiology of important body cavities to understand their characteristics as it is a pivotal foundation for the successful development of in-mouth devices. Next, the advanced development in lab-in-a-mouth sensors and point-of-need sensors for analyzing saliva are explained. In addition, we discuss the integrations of artificial intelligence and electronic technologies in smart sensing networks for healthcare systems. This review ends with a discussion of the challenges, future research trends, and opportunities in relevant disciplines. Mouthguard-based sensors and conventional salivary sensing devices will continue to be significant for the progress in the next-generation sensing technologies and smart healthcare systems.
