Graphene oxide (GO) has attracted an increasing amount of interest because of its potential applications in biomedical fields such as biological imaging, molecular imaging, drug/gene delivery, and cancer therapy. Moreover, GO could be fabricated by modifying its functional groups to impart specific functional or structural attributes. This study demonstrated the development of a GO-based efficient gene delivery carrier through installation of polyethylenimine, a cationic polymer, which has been widely used as a nonviral gene delivery vector. It was revealed that a hybrid gene carrier fabricated by conjugation of low-molecular weight branched polyethylenimine (BPEI) to GO increased the effective molecular weight of BPEI and consequently improved DNA binding and condensation and transfection efficiency. A biomimetic jellyfish robot based on ionic polymer metal composite actuators was fabricated and activated to mimic real locomotive behavior with pulse and recovery processes. To imitate the curved shape of the jellyfish, a thermal treatment was applied to obtain a permanent initial deformation of a hemispherical form. The bio-inspired input signal was generated for mimicking real locomotion of the jellyfish. The vertical floating displacement and the thrust force of the biomimetic jellyfish robot under various input signals were measured and compared. The present results show that the bio-inspired electrical input signal with pulse-recovery process generates much higher floating velocity of the biomimetic jellyfish robot in comparison with pure sinusoidal excitations. The curved shape of the IPMC actuator through thermal treatments can be successfully applied to mimic the real biomimetic robots with smooth curves.

This paper presents a comprehensive review of ionic polymer–metal composite (IPMC) actuators. Recently, strong emphasis has been put on investigating various ionic polymer membranes for high-performance IPMC actuators and overcoming some drawbacks of ionic polymer actuators to improve stability and reliability. The paper gives an overview of different types of sulfonated ionic polymer membranes. Various emerging materials that exhibit notably good deformation, stability, and efficiency are extensively considered. A thorough comparison of different state-of-the-art ion exchange membranes is presented. Along with the material study, recent trends in modeling and control approached of IPMC actuators are presented. Serious climate changes and energy-related environmental problems are currently critical issues in the world. In order to reduce carbon emissions and save our environment, renewable energy harvesting technologies will serve as a key solution in the near future. Among them, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), which is one of the most promising mechanical energy harvesters by means of contact electrification phenomenon, are explosively developing due to abundant wasting mechanical energy sources and a number of superior advantages in a wide availability and selection of materials, relatively simple device configurations, and low-cost processing. Electrochemical splitting of water is an attractive way to produce hydrogen fuel as a clean and renewable energy source. However, a major challenge is to accelerate the sluggish kinetics of the anodic half‐cell reaction where oxygen evolution reaction (OER) takes place. Here, a seamlessly conductive 3D architecture is reported with a carbon‐shelled Ni‐Co nanowire network as a highly efficient OER electrocatalyst. Highly porous and granular Ni‐Co nanowires are first grown on a carbon fiber woven fabric utilizing a cost‐effective hydrothermal method and then conductive carbon shell is coated on the Ni‐Co nanowires via glucose carbonization and annealing processes. The conductive carbon layer surrounding the nanowires is introduced to provide a continuous pathway for facile electron transport throughout the whole of the integrated 3D catalyst. Above all, biodegradable and biocompatible materials, especially, which are also known as eco-friendly materials, are natural or synthetic materials that can function in intimate contact with living systems without any adverse reaction or toxicity response.[11, 12] Using sustainable and eco-friendly biomaterials for electronic devices is the most important issue nowadays in view of the environment, health, and safety.[13] Silk, one of naturally abundant and eco-friendly biomaterials,[14] has been a common subject in various research fields, because it has several distinctive properties including mechanically high strength,[15] good biocompatibility with cell proliferation,[16] and adhesion.[12, 17] Silk is a natural protein fiber that is composed mainly of fibroin and is produced by certain insect larvae to form cocoons. Silk fibers from the Bombyx mori silkworm have a triangular cross section with rounded corners, 5–10 µm wide and the fibroin-heavy chain is composed mostly of beta-sheets, due to a 59-mer amino acid repeat sequence with some variations. Silk is one of the strongest natural fibers and has a durable nature over other fabrics.[15] Silk is a poor conductor of electricity, but susceptible to static cling. However, to the best of our knowledge, although silk is a mechanically strong and superior electronegativity biomaterial, it has not been applied to a triboelectric power generator until now. Motivated by a desire to resolve the needs of sustainable energy resources, remote sensing electronics, wireless autonomous devices, mobile internet of things (IoT) and portable self-power generators, triboelectric nanogenerators have recently been suggested. However, more specialized target applications to biomedical and wearable devices will require biocompatible and eco-friendly triboelectric materials in power generators. Herein, we report for the first time a bio-triboelectric nanogenerator based on an eco-friendly and naturally abundant biomaterial, bacterial nanocellulose. We report a highly versatile and one-pot microwave route to the mass production of three-dimensional graphene-carbon nanotube-iron oxide nanostructures for the efficient removal of arsenic from contaminated water. The unique three-dimensional nanostructure shows that carbon nanotubes are vertically standing on graphene sheets and iron oxide nanoparticles are decorated on both the graphene and the carbon nanotubes. The material with iron oxide nanoparticles shows excellent absorption for arsenic removal from contaminated water, due to its high surface-to-volume ratio and open pore network of the graphene-carbon nanotube-iron oxide three-dimensional nanostructures.

Piezoelectric thin films offer a number of advantages in various applications, such as high energy density harvesters, a wide dynamic range, and high sensitivity sensors, as well as large displacement and low power consumption actuators. This review covers the available material forms and applications of piezoelectric thin films: lead zirconate titanate (PZT)-based thin films, lead-free piezoelectric thin films, piezopolymer films, cellulose-based electroactive paper (EAPap), and many other thin films used for electromechanical transduction. The electromechanical properties and performances of piezoelectric films are compared and their suitability for particular applications are reported. The key ideas of piezoelectric thin films are reviewed and discussed for sensory and actuation systems, energy harvesting, and medical and acoustic transducers. Electro-active actuators based on graphene reinforced Nafion composite electrolytes were developed and their electro-chemo-mechanical properties and actuation performances were investigated. The tensile strength of the graphene–Nafion ionic membrane was significantly improved up to 200% within 1.0wt.% loading, and Young’s modulus was more than two times with a minute loading of graphene to Nafion electrolyte. The proton conductivity and the water-uptake ratio were greatly improved, while apparent changes in the ion exchange capacity were not observed. Morphological tests, chemical techniques, and scattering techniques were used to study the interaction mechanism between graphene and Nafion, resulting in great improvements of the actuation performances. Ionic polymer actuators driven by electrical stimuli have been widely investigated for use in practical applications such as bioinspired robots, sensors, and biomedical devices. However, conventional ionic polymer–metal composite actuators have a serious drawback of poor durability under long-term actuation in open air, mainly because of the leakage of the inner electrolyte and hydrated cations through cracks in the metallic electrodes. Here, we developed a highly durable and water-floatable ionic polymer artificial muscle by employing hydrophobic and asymmetrically laser-scribed reduced graphene oxide paper electrodes (HLrGOP). Existing ionic artificial muscles still require a technology breakthrough for much faster response speed, higher bending strain, and longer durability. Here, we report an MXene artificial muscle based on ionically cross-linked Ti 3 C 2 T x with poly(3,4 ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate), showing ultrafast rise time of within 1 s in DC responses, extremely large bending strain up to 1.37% in very low input voltage regime (0.1 to 1 V), long-term cyclic stability of 97% up to 18,000 cycles, markedly reduced phase delay, and very broad frequency bandwidth up to 20 Hz with good structural reliability without delamination under continuous electrical stimuli. These artificial muscles were successfully applied to make an origami-inspired narcissus flower robot as a wearable brooch and dancing butterflies and leaves on a tree as a kinetic art piece. Here, we report a rapid and straightforward microwave method to synthesize a multilayered and interconnected three-dimensional graphene-carbon nanotube-iron oxide (3D G-CNT-Fe 2 O 3 ) heteronanostructure for a flexible and wideband high-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding film. The single integrated 3D G-CNT-Fe 2 O 3 heteronanostructure that consists of carbon nanotubes, graphene sheets and iron oxide nanoparticles results in strong synergy from multilevel EMI shielding due to strong coupling among conduction loss, hysteresis loss and multiple scattering. As a result, multilevel reflection, absorption, and scattering processes are realized on the surfaces and interlayers of the 3D heteronanostructure, and much higher SE (Shielding effectiveness) values (130–134 dB) are observed in a bandwidth ranging from 8.0 to 12.0 GHz. In this study, we report a novel route via microwave irradiation to synthesize a bio-inspired hierarchical graphene–nanotube–iron three-dimensional nanostructure as an anode material in lithium-ion batteries. The nanostructure comprises vertically aligned carbon nanotubes grown directly on graphene sheets along with shorter branches of carbon nanotubes stemming out from both the graphene sheets and the vertically aligned carbon nanotubes. This bio-inspired hierarchical structure provides a three-dimensional conductive network for efficient charge-transfer and prevents the agglomeration and restacking of the graphene sheets enabling Li-ions to have greater access to the electrode material. In addition, functional iron-oxide nanoparticles decorated within the three-dimensional hierarchical structure provides outstanding lithium storage characteristics, resulting in very high specific capacities. Sulfur and nitrogen co-doped graphene electrodes for bioinspired ionic artificial muscles, which exhibit outstanding actuation performances (bending strain of 0.36%, 4.5 times higher than Pedot PSS electrodes, and 96% of initial strain after demonstration over 18 000 cycles), provide remarkable electro-chemo-mech anical properties: specific capacitance, electrical conductivity, and large surface area with mesoporosity.

We report an easy strategy to synthesize graphene-wrapped and cobalt oxide-intercalated (GWCI) hybrid nanostructures using microwave irradiation for an extremely durable supercapacitor with ultrahigh energy and power densities. The GWCI hybrid nanostructures that are mechanically protected and squeezed by graphene layers are beneficial for efficiently preventing the detachments of metal oxide nanoparticles from graphene surfaces due to volume expansion and contraction during charge and discharge cycling. This GWCI material shows a remarkable cycling stability over 10,000 cycles due to the intercalation of cobalt oxide (Co 3 O 4 ) nanoparticles between graphene layers and external wrapping by graphene layers. MXenes, a member of 2D inorganic compounds that contain few‐atom‐thick layers of transition metal carbides, nitrides, and polar surface functional groups, are extraordinary materials for many applications including stimuli‐responsive actuators. Here, an extensive review on MXene‐based actuators in comparison with other 2D materials‐based actuators is reported, highlighting the main differences in view of chemical structure, mechanical properties, and electrical functionalities. With increasing interest in human health, stretchable and wearable sensors have attracted a lot of attention for real-time health monitoring. However, most wearable sensors require external power sources, show structural failures under repeated mechanical strains and are not suitable for sensing low-frequency body motion. Herein, we report that a highly stretchable and self-healable hydrogel conductor was newly synthesized with all ocean biomaterials including catechol, chitosan and diatom. The catechol-chitosan-diatom hydrogel (CCDHG) conductor was exploited as stretchable triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) for energy harvesting from human motion and skin-attachable self-powered tremor sensors for monitoring the health condition of Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients. Skin-attachable wearable devices including triboelectric nanogerators (TENGs) and self-powered sensors will have biofriendly and biocompatible issues, because they can directly interact with the human body. Based on the diatom frustule and chitosan, known as biocompatible ocean biomaterials, we developed a chitosan-diatom TENG for biofriendly and skin-attachable wearable devices. The highly porous diatom frustule, which is naturally abundant and mass-producible from mega-scale ocean environments, can be used as a biocompatible additive to greatly change electro-positivity and surface properties of chitosan films, showing bio-affinity and much higher output power. The time averaged power density of the chitosan-diatom triboelectric nanogenerator is measured as 15.7 mW/m 2 , which is 3.7 times higher than that of the pure chitosan TENG. Development of biomimetic actuators has been an essential motivation in the study of smart materials. However, few materials are capable of controlling complex twisting and bending deformations simultaneously or separately using a dynamic control system. Here, we report an ionic polymer-metal composite actuator having multiple-shape memory effect, and is able to perform complex motion by two external inputs, electrical and thermal. Prior to the development of this type of actuator, this capability only could be realized with existing actuator technologies by using multiple actuators or another robotic system.
