Isolated carbon microspheres in a diameter range of 1–4μm were prepared by hydrothermal treatment of mono-saccharides (xylose for pentose and fructose for hexose) with phenolic compounds–phenol, resorcinol, and phloroglucinol. It was found that addition of these compounds, particularly phloroglucinol, into a sugar solution led to a substantial increase (roughly 20-fold) of the carbon yield. Mono-saccharides are dehydrated into furan compounds during hydrothermal carbonization, and these compounds subsequently react with phloroglucinol, as revealed by examination of high-performance liquid chromatograms. Through elemental analysis and spectroscopic studies, it was found that several oxygen functionalities including hydroxyl, carbonyl, carboxyl, ether, quinone, and ester groups were located throughout the carbon spheres derived from sugars and phloroglucinol. This Account describes a new strategy for the preparation of label-free sensor systems based on the fluorogenic properties of the conjugated polymer, polydiacetylene (PDA). PDA has been extensively investigated as a sensor matrix, owing to a brilliant blue-to-red color transition that takes place in response to environmental perturbations. It has been known for some time that “blue-phase” PDAs are nonfluorescent while their “red-phase” counterparts fluoresce. For the most part, however, the significance of the different fluorogenic properties of PDAs has been ignored in the context of sensor applications. In the course of developing PDA-based sensors, we discovered that PDA vesicles can be readily immobilized on solid substrates. This is an attractive property of PDAs since it leads to the combined advantages of the vesicle sensors (which have three-dimensional interactions between sensor and target …

Biological matrices can direct the absolute alignment of inorganic crystals such as calcite. Cooperative effects at an organic-inorganic interface resulted in similar co-alignment of calcite at polymeric Langmuir-Schaefer films of 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid (p-PDA). The films nucleated calcite at the (012) face, and the crystals were co-aligned with respect to the polymer's conjugated backbone. At the same time, the p-PDA alkyl side chains reorganized to optimize the stereochemical fit to the calcite structure, as visualized by changes in the optical spectrum of the polymer. These results indicate the kinds of interactions that may occur in biological systems where large arrays of crystals are co-aligned.

To investigate the role of hydrogen-bonding on colorimetric transition of polydiacetylene supramolecules, novel diacetylene derivatives allowing various hydrogen-bonding states were synthesized by coupling carboxy-substituted (ortho-, meta-, and para-) anilide groups with a typical single-chain diacetylene lipid. One with a terminal carboxyl group at the meta position provided the resulting supramolecular Langmuir−Schaefer films with enhanced hydrogen-bonding, and hence resulted in unprecedented colorimetric reversibility under both thermal and pH stimuli.

The colorimetric reversibility of polydiacetylene supramolecules, derived from a variety of functionalized diacetylenic lipids, has been subjected to detailed investigation. In an earlier effort, it was shown that polydiacetylene vesicles prepared from PCDA- m BzA 1 , bearing terminal m -carboxyphenylamido groups, display complete reversibility upon thermal stimulation [ J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2003 , 125 , 8976]. The origin and nature of reversible thermochromism in these systems have been elucidated in-situ in the current studies by using polydiacetylene supramolecules, prepared from analogues of PCDA- m BzA 1 . Issues related to the effects of (1) internal amide groups, (2) headgroup aromatic interactions, (3) lengths of the hydrophobic alkyl chains, and (4) terminal carboxylic groups on the colorimetric reversibility of the polydiacetylene supramolecules have been probed. The galvanostatic lithiation/sodiation voltage profiles of hard carbon anodes are simple, with a sloping drop followed by a plateau. However, a precise understanding of the corresponding redox sites and storage mechanisms is still elusive, which hinders further development in commercial applications. Here, a comprehensive comparison of the lithium‐ and sodium‐ion storage behaviors of hard carbon is conducted, yielding the following key findings: 1) the sloping voltage section is presented by the lithium‐ion intercalation in the graphitic lattices of hard carbons, whereas it mainly arises from the chemisorption of sodium ions on their inner surfaces constituting closed pores, even if the graphitic lattices are unoccupied; 2) the redox sites for the plateau capacities are the same as those for the closed pores regardless of the alkali ions; 3) the sodiation plateau capacities are mostly determined by the volume of the …

Even though the inkjet technology has been recognized as one of the most promising technologies for electronic and bio industries, the full understanding of the dynamics of an inkjet droplet at its operating conditions is still lacking. In this study, the normal impact of water droplets on solid substrates was investigated experimentally. The size of water droplets studied here was 46 μm and was much smaller than the most of the previous studies on drop impact. The Weber number (We) and Reynolds number (Re) were 0.05−2 and 10−100, respectively, and the Ohnesorge number was fixed at 0.017. The wettability of the solid substrate was varied by adsorbing a self-assembled monolayer of octadecyltrichlorosilane followed by the exposure to UV−ozone plasma. Self-assembled diacetylene vesicles were spotted and immobilized on aldehyde-modified glass substrates using conventional microarray technology. Irradiation of the immobilized diacetylenes allowed generation of nonfluorescent “blue-phase” polydiacetylene (PDA) arrays. Specific interaction of the PDA vesicle arrays with carbohydrates or poly(acrylic acid) solutions afforded fluorescent profiles.

Polydiacetylenes (PDAs), a family of highly π‐conjugated polymers, have unique characteristics associated with their ability to self‐assemble. Disruption of the extensively delocalized enyne backbones of molecularly ordered PDA sidechains induces a blue‐to‐red color change, which has been elegantly applied in the design of chemosensors. Recently, colorimetrically reversible PDAs have received significant attention, not only to gain a better understanding of the fundamentals of PDA chromism, but also to develop methodologies to overcome limitations associated with their colorimetrically irreversible counterparts. In this article, recent progress made in the field of colorimetrically tunable (reversible, stable, or sensitive) PDAs is described. A novel surface modification method has been developed to improve biocompatibility of polymeric biomaterials. This approach involves ozonation and then followed by graft polymerization with acrylates containing PEG, sulfonated PEG or by coupling of PEG derivatives. All the reactions were confirmed by ATR FT-IR and ESCA. The degree of ozonation measured by the iodide method was dependent on the ozone permeability of the polymers used. Surface hydrophilicity was investigated by measuring the contact angles. Ozonation itself yielded a slight increase in hydrophilicity and a decrease in platelet adhesion, but PEG immobilization showed a significant effect on surface hydrophilicity and platelet adhesion to confirm well-known PEG’s passivity which minimize the adhesion of blood components on polymer surfaces. Polymerized thin films based on polydiacetylenes (PDAs) undergo distinct color transitions that lend themselves to applications in biosensing, surface modification, nonlinear optics, and molecular electronics. The mechanism of the thermochromic blue to red color transition of PDA thin films was investigated at the molecular level using atomic force microscopy and at the macroscopic level with visible absorption and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The thermochromic transition temperature is found to be between 70 and 90 °C. At the molecular level, the ordering of the film increases at the thermochromic transition and remains ordered up to temperatures well above the transition (e.g., 130 °C). No evidence for previously suggested entanglement or disordering of the alkyl side chains is observed. Polydiacetylene‐based chemosensors are prepared by assembling liposomes of diacetylene monomers with terminal amine groups on an aldehyde‐modified glass substrate, and polymerizing them by irradiation with UV light. Incubation of the immobilized film sensor in a poly(acrylic acid) solution results in a color change from the original blue (solid line in Figure) to the red phase (broken line).

Wettability of chitosan coating solutions on‘Fuji’ apple skin in different surfactant concentration (Tween 80: 0, 10, 100, 1000 ppm) was investigated using the Du Nouy ring method and the sessile‐drop method. The surface property of‘Fuji’ apple skin as a coated solid surface was characterized by the Zisman plot. The critical surface tension of‘Fuji’ apple skin was 18.7 dyne/cm. The surface tension of the chitosan coating solution was too high (61.5 dyne/cm) to wet the apple skin. Tween 80 as surfactant in water‐borne coatings reduced the surface tension of the coating solution and enhanced its wettability. Surface morphology of the coated film was observed by scanning electron microscope. Surfactant driven autophilicity improved the adhesive force between coating solution and associative apple skin, and decreased the contact angle of coating solution.

Polymer microfibers encapsulating polydiacetylene (PDA) supramolecules (see figure) are prepared by using the electrospinning technique. Randomly distributed diacetylene monomers are found to self-assemble during fiber formation and enable the generation of blue-colored PDA-containing polymer fibers upon UV irradiation. Micro-patterned images with a single fiber as well as the feasibility of a fiber-based sensor are demonstrated.

Limiting current densities equivalent to the transport-controlling step of lithium ions in organic electrolytes were measured by using a rotating disk electrode (RDE). The diffusion coefficients of lithium ion in the electrolyte of PC/LiClO 4 , EC : DEC/LiPF 6 and EC : DMC/LiPF 6 were determined by the limiting current density data according to the Levich equation. The diffusion coefficients increased in the order of PC/LiClO 4 <EC : DEC/LiPF 6 <EC : DMC/ LiPF 6 with respect to molar concentration of lithium salt. The maximum value of diffusivity was 1.39x10-5cm 2 /s for 1M LiPF 6 in EC : DMC=1 : 1. Exchange current densities and transfer coefficients of each electrolyte were determined according to the Butler-Volmer equation.

We report electrical transport through 60 base pairs of polydG-polydC DNA molecules. The DNA solution is dropped on two metal electrodes with the gap of 20 nm. The current–voltage characteristics measured between the electrodes exhibits clear staircases, which are reproducible over repeated measurements. The size of the observed staircases is consistent with the energy gap obtained from a tight binding calculation.© 2002 American Institute of Physics. Spin cast and Langmuir- Blodgett (LB) films of atactic PMMA [poly (methyl methacrylate)] were studied at 25 C by FTIR ATR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, attenuated total reflection) spectroscopy before and after annealing at 140 C and after contact with water vapor or liquid. The dichroic ratios of the carbonyl groups revealed that the average molecular orientations of the films remained unchanged upon annealing and also upon exposure to water. However, annealing helped avoiding cracks which appeared in the nonannealed film after contacting liquid water. The absorbances of individual water bands (of the non-hydrogen-bondedmonomers, hydrogen-bonded dimers, larger clusters, and associated chains of water) were determined by detailed spectral analysis and compared with a one-dimensional Fickian model. The absorbance data for the annealed spin cast film of thickness of 5.4 µ showed poor …

Activation of T cell immune response is critical for the therapeutic efficacy of cancer immunotherapy. Current immunotherapies have shown remarkable clinical success against several cancers; however, significant responses remain restricted to a minority of patients. Here, we show a therapeutic strategy that combines enhancing the phagocytic activity of antigen-presenting cells with immunogenic cell death to trigger efficient antitumour immunity. Rho-kinase (ROCK) blockade increases cancer cell phagocytosis and induces antitumour immunity through enhancement of T cell priming by dendritic cells (DCs), leading to suppression of tumour growth in syngeneic tumour models. Combining ROCK blockade with immunogenic chemotherapy leads to increased DC maturation and synergistic CD8 + cytotoxic T cell priming and infiltration into tumours. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films embedded with functional polydiacetylene (PDA) are efficiently prepared for color and fluorescence imaging. Intensely blue films are obtained by mixing and drying solutions containing PDA vesicles and PVA. A blue‐to‐red color transition is observed upon heating the polymer films. In addition, selective UV irradiation (through a photomask) of PVA films containing diacetylene monomer results in the generation of micropatterned color (without heating) and both color and fluorescent images (after heating the films at 120 °C for 10 s). Patterned two‐color (blue and red) images in the polymer film are readily obtained by a sequential process of photomasked irradiation, heating, and unmasked irradiation.

FTIR-ATR dichroic ratios with and without a rotation of the ATR plates were measured for calcium or cadmium or lead stearate LB monomolecular films on germanium, hydrophilic silicon, and hydrophobic silicon plates. Various models for uniaxial or biaxial orientations of chain axes and transition moments are presented and critically evaluated. A biaxial orientation distribution was observed for calcium stearate. The average tilt and azimuthal angles of the chain axes were found to be 36 and 42, respectively. Those angles of the transition moments of the CH2 group were 66 and 46, respectively. Cadmium and lead stearate monolayers had nearly uniaxial chain and moment distributions. Molecular orientations varied substantially with the ion type bound to the polar groups but little with the substrate surface.
