The Steel Control Research Center, established on July 1, 1995, by POSCO and POSTECH's Electrical Engineering Department, aims to cultivate excellent human resources in control and instrumentation for the steel industry. It conducts long-term, sustained research on fundamental technologies in measurement, control, systems, and automation related to steel processes, ultimately contributing to the advancement of steel processes and the sophistication of steel products in Korea. The center focuses on establishing practical industry-academia-research cooperation. Since its inception, it has undertaken various projects from POSCO, hosted joint workshops with ICASE (Korean Association of Automatic Control) Daegu-Gyeongbuk branch, and organized seminars with experts in control and instrumentation. In 2004, Professor Won Sang-chul, then head of the center, was appointed chairman of the Mining Mineral and Metal processing division under the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), strengthening international R&D collaboration. The center actively participates in IFAC-related international conferences and tracks international research trends in steel control through agreements with global steel control research institutes and universities. From 2001 to 2015, six professors from the Electrical Engineering Department participated, conducting 35 related projects with approximately 4.6 billion KRW in research funding. The center's activities are divided into research on fundamental technologies in measurement and control for steel processes and educational programs for human resource development in this field. Its motto is to ultimately contribute to the advancement of steelmaking processes by conducting goal-oriented, long-term research in measurement, control, and process automation within an industry-academia-research cooperation framework. Key research areas include large-scale distributed control systems, real-time control PLC and VME systems, electronic switches and power compensators for AC power, motor drive control, sensor and measurement technology for process automation, and factory automation networks. The center recruits about five graduate students annually for steel control, granting them master's degrees upon graduation, with a curriculum identical to the Electrical Engineering graduate program. For international research exchange, the center has organized and participated in various domestic and international conferences since its establishment. In 1996, it hosted the Korean Automatic Control Conference (KACC), and in 1997, it organized the ASI conference after signing agreements with 16 steel control centers in countries like the UK, Germany, and Japan for efficient research activities. It has consistently strived for efficient education and research in similar academic fields and increased international joint research and information exchange. It also holds international joint conferences with China, Australia, and the UK to promote significant advancements in domestic control automation system technology. In 2001, it organized invited lecture sessions at the SICE/ICASE joint workshop and the IFAC MMM symposium. The IFAC Mining Mineral and Metal processing division, led by Professor Won Sang-chul, sponsors various IFAC events annually. Domestically, it has actively supported academic activities, including organizing annual joint academic conferences with the Steel Control Technology Research Group and the ICASE Daegu-Gyeongbuk branch since 1998. An operating committee, divided into academic, research, and administrative sections, discusses and decides on all matters under the center head. The academic section handles recruitment of industry-academia scholarship students, admissions, graduations, and short courses. The research section manages research project selection and organizes academic conferences related to steel measurement and control. The administrative section handles center operations, planning, and public relations.
