In this review article, we focus on the various types of materials used in biomedical implantable devices, including the polymeric materials used as substrates and for the packaging of such devices. Polymeric materials are used because of the ease of fabrication, flexibility, and their biocompatible nature as well as their wide range of mechanical, electrical, chemical, and thermal behaviors when combined with different materials as composites. Biocompatible and biostable polymers are extensively used to package implanted devices, with the main criteria that include gas permeability and water permeability of the packaging polymer to protect the electronic circuit of the device from moisture and ions inside the human body. Super-stretchable, skin-mountable, and ultra-soft strain sensors are presented by using carbon nanotube percolation network–silicone rubber nanocomposite thin films. The applicability of the strain sensors as epidermal electronic systems, in which mechanical compliance like human skin and high stretchability (epsilon> 100%) are required, has been explored. The sensitivity of the strain sensors can be tuned by the number density of the carbon nanotube percolation network. The strain sensors show excellent hysteresis performance at different strain levels and rates with high linearity and small drift. We found that the carbon nanotube–silicone rubber based strain sensors possess super-stretchability and high reliability for strains as large as 500%. We demonstrate a highly sensitive label-free Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) biosensor based on silicon nitride slot waveguide. Unlike the conventional MZI sensors, the sensing arm of the sensor consists of a slot waveguide while the reference arm consists of a strip waveguide. Thanks to the slot waveguide's property to provide high optical intensity in a subwavelength-size low refractive index region (slot region), which allows high light–analyte interaction, higher sensitivity can be obtained as compared to conventional waveguides using the slot waveguide as sensing region. The bulk refractive index sensitivity of the slot waveguide MZI sensor was found to be 1864 π /RIU (refractive index unit) with 7 mm long slot waveguide sensing arm, which shows higher sensitivity compared to the conventional MZI device based on silicon nitride. Vat photopolymerization is a widely adopted additive manufacturing process category owing to its high accuracy and accessibility. These technologies utilize a light source to cure the surface of a vat filled with liquid photopolymer resin layer by layer and recent developments in resin composition have led to developments in 4D printing. 4D printing is an extension of 3D printing in which the object transforms itself into a predefined structure upon the application of external stimuli such as heat, humidity, or light amongst others. Additive manufacturing (AM) also known as 3D printing have been making inroads into medical applications such as surgical models and tools, tooling equipment, medical devices. One key area researchers are looking into is bioimplants. With the improvement and development of AM technologies, many different bioimplants can be made using 3D printing. Different biomaterials and various AM technologies can be used to create customized bioimplants to suit the individual needs. With the aid of 3D printing this could lead to new foam and design of bioimplants in the near further. Therefore, the purpose of this review articles is to (1) Describe the various AM technologies and process used to make bioimplants, (2) Different types of bioimplants printed with AM and (3) Discuss some of the challenges and future developments for 3D printed bioimplants.

Fabrication of tissue engineering scaffolds with the use of novel 3D printing has gained lot of attention, however systematic investigation of biomaterials for 3D printing have not been widely explored. In this report, well‐defined structures of polycaprolactone (PCL) and PCL‐ carbon nanotube (PCL‐CNT) composite scaffolds have been designed and fabricated using a 3D printer. Conditions for 3D printing has been optimized while the effects of varying CNT percentages with PCL matrix on the thermal, mechanical and biological properties of the printed scaffolds are studied. Raman spectroscopy is used to characterise the functionalized CNTs and its interactions with PCL matrix. Mechanical properties of the composites are characterised using nanoindentation. Once a key factor behind Vietnam's successful Doi Moi (restoration) economic reforms, the rice-centered agriculture of the VMD is now confronted by the new pressure of climate change impacts, including the intensifying salinity intrusion (SI). The SI menace has partly triggered the delta-wide emergence of new adaptive livelihood models across the VMD, including the prawn rice rotational crop (PRRC) that is arguably the most prominent. Research on the SI-driving factors is rapidly increasing in numbers, yet little synthesis has been done. Likewise, several studies have investigated the economic benefits of PRRC; less emphasis has placed on environmental and societal aspects, hence the questionable sustainability. The purpose of this investigation was to identify and quantify the volatile chemical spoilage indexes (CSIs) for raw Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ) fillets stored under aerobic storage conditions at 4, 10 and 21 °C in relation to microbial and sensory shelf lives. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were analyzed with SPME-GC-MS technique. Through multivariate chemometric method, hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and Pearson's correlations, the CSIs: trimethylamine (TMA), ethanol (EtOH), 3-methyl-1-butanol (3Met-1But), acetoin and acetic acid (C 2 ) were selected from the group of 28 detected VOCs. At the moment of microbiological shelf life established at total viable count (TVC) of 7.0 log CFU/g, the CSIs achieved levels of 11.5, 38.3, 0.3, 24.0 and 90.7 μg/g of salmon for TMA, EtOH, 3M-1But, acetoin and C 2 , respectively. The primary objective of this study is to develop an optimal dispersant concentration for high-precision PZT ceramic components with a high surface quality via a digital light processing (DLP) based vat photopolymerization method. Here, the ceramic suspension formulations composed of PZT ceramics (80 wt%), photoinitiator (1 wt%), dispersant (1,2,3 wt%), and monomer (18,17,16 wt%) were prepared to characterize the influences of dispersant concentrations on 1) the rheological properties and 2) the dispersion stability of ceramic suspensions as well as 3) the curing properties and 4) the surface quality of the DLP printed ceramic components. Interestingly, the optimal dispersant concentration (2 wt%) determined by FTIR spectroscopy induced the lowest viscosity, the lowest sedimentation rate, and the highest dispersion stability, which are considered desirable for the DLP printing process. The high sensitivity and wide bandwidth of mammalian hearing are thought to derive from an active process involving the somatic and hair-bundle motility of the thousands of outer hair cells uniquely found in mammalian cochleae. To better understand this, a biophysical three-dimensional cochlear fluid model was developed for gerbil, chinchilla, cat, and human, featuring an active "push-pull" cochlear amplifier mechanism based on the cytoarchitecture of the organ of Corti and using the time-averaged Lagrangian method. Cochlear responses are simulated and compared with in vivo physiological measurements for the basilar membrane (BM) velocity, V BM , frequency tuning of the BM vibration, and Q 10 values representing the sharpness of the cochlear tuning curves. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of load carriage on the kinematics and kinetics of the ankle and knee joints during uphill walking, including joint work, range of motion (ROM), and stance time. Fourteen males walked at a self-selected speed on an uphill (15°) slope wearing military boots and carrying a rifle in hand without a backpack (control condition) and with a backpack. The results showed that the stance time significantly decreased with backpack carriage ( p < .05). The mediolateral impulse significantly increased with backpack carriage ( p < .05). In the ankle joints, the inversion-eversion, and dorsi-plantar flexion ROM in the ankle joints increased with backpack carriage ( p < .05). The greater dorsi-plantar flexion ROM with backpack carriage suggested 1 strategy for obtaining high plantar flexor power during uphill walking. The result …

Waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE, also known as E-Waste) has emerged as a serious issue for the whole world along with the evolution of modern industry. WEEE plastic contains heavy metals (arsenic, mercury, chromium, cadmium, lead, etc.) and halogen materials (bromine, chlorine, etc.), which are toxic and harmful to the environment, therefore the recycling of WEEE plastic is necessary and critical. Not only the various additives in the polymer but also the contaminations from polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), batteries, etc, make the recycling process challenging. We demonstrate a new architecture for a low temperature solid oxide fuel cell to enlarge the lateral dimension of the fragile nano thin film electrolyte from the micrometer to millimeter scale with greatly enhanced mechanical stability. The new structure was achieved by simple silicon micromachining processes to change the membrane shape from a square to a circle to reduce buckling-induced stress concentration that often caused membrane fracture. A tapered silicon membrane support with the thickest end of 30 μm was introduced as an effective membrane stress absorber. The new architecture effectively suppressed membrane buckling and decreased the maximum principal stress by 30–40%. The largest lateral dimension of the stable membranes was 3 mm in diameter, and the survival rate was significantly improved over square membranes having the same lateral dimension. Intracochlear pressure is calculated from a physiologically based, three-dimensional gerbil cochlea model. Olson [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 103, 3445–3463 (1998); 110, 349–367 (2001)] measured gerbil intracochlear pressure and provided approximations for the following derived quantities:(1) basilar membrane velocity,(2) pressure across the organ of Corti, and (3) partition impedance. The objective of this work is to compare the calculations and measurements for the pressure at points and the derived quantities. The model includes the three-dimensional viscous fluid and the pectinate zone of the elastic orthotropic basilar membrane with dimensional and material property variation along its length. In this study, we propose a bistable energy harvester with an auxiliary magnet oscillator (BEH-O), whose motion is mechanically rectified to enhance its broadband energy harvesting performance. The design of the proposed BEH-O system is based on local modification of the double-well potential. The auxiliary oscillator with the mechanical rectifier is designed in such a manner that its rectified half-sine motion tends to reduce the saddle barrier of restoring potential, leading to a possibility of an easier escape from the potential well, while keeping other parts of the potential, thereby maintaining high-energy orbital motion. Consequently, the lower bound of the operating frequency band of the BEH-O is reduced, when compared to its conventional counterpart, ie, conventional bistable energy harvester (CBEH), while its upper bound remains unchanged. Amongst the different categories of additive manufacturing technologies, Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) has become the most widely adopted owing to its accessibility, low complexity, and high flexibility. Although notable advancements in FDM have been achieved, weak mechanical properties remain a barrier to produce functional components. This limitation is a result of weak interlayer bonding inherent to the layer-by-layer fabrication since the lower layers rapidly cool below glass transition temperature before the next one is deposited. This work presents the installation of a heated roller to compress each layer homogeneously onto the previous one after it has been printed to increase interlayer adhesion. With the ongoing rapid development and increased availability of these technologies, it has become crucial to develop novel materials with unique functionalities for 3D‐printed components. We investigated the effect of electrolyte thickness and operating temperature on the heat and mass transfer characteristics of solid oxide fuel cells. We conducted extensive numerical simulations to analyze single cell performance of a planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with electrolyte thicknesses from 80 to 100 μm and operating temperatures between 700 °C and 800 °C. The commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code was utilized to simulate the transport behavior and electrochemical reactions. As expected, the maximum power density increased with decreasing electrolyte thickness, and the difference became significant when the current density increased among different electrolyte thicknesses at a fixed temperature. Thinner electrolytes are beneficial for volumetric power density due to lower ohmic loss. Moreover, the SOFC performance enhanced with increasing operating temperature, which substantially changed the reaction rate along the channel direction. This study can be used to help design SOFC stacks to achieve enhanced heat and mass transfer during operation.
